Director Credit

Job Details:

    • The Head of Credit is a senior executive role at the heart of MMBL's transformation into a fully digital, data-driven financial institution. This role carries accountability for the entire credit architecture of the bank — from policy and underwriting strategy to portfolio performance and NPL governance. The incumbent will lead a multi-disciplinary function spanning SME credit, consumer lending, and Islamic (Sharia-compliant) financing, while owning the bank's AI-enabled credit decisioning infrastructure. The role demands a rare combination of classical credit depth, digital banking acumen, and the ability to build and lead high-performance teams in a rapidly evolving environment. As a direct report to the Chief Risk Officer, the Head of Credit is expected to function as a thought leader on credit strategy and a custodian of credit quality across the full lending portfolio.
    • • Own and lead MMBL's end-to-end credit function, covering the full credit lifecycle across all segments — SME, Consumer, and digital micro-lending with accountability for portfolio quality, NPL ratios, and credit P&L contribution.
    • • Set and continuously refine the bank's credit strategy: driving a touchless, AI-first credit architecture that eliminates physical intervention across origination, underwriting, disbursement, and monitoring.
    • • Lead the Credit Initiation Unit (CIU) and Credit Verification Unit (CVU), ensuring seamless, automated credit journeys from application intake through decisioning, with clearly defined TATs, exception protocols, and digital audit trails.
    • • Own AI and machine learning-based credit scoring infrastructure — including behavioural scorecards, alternative data models (telecom, mobile money, psychometric, e-commerce), and bureau-integrated decisioning engines — for new-to-bank, repeat, and EMI lending products.
    • • Govern the full credit policy framework: product-level credit policies, underwriting standards, approval matrices, concentration limits, and segment-specific risk appetite parameters across SME and consumer portfolios.
    • • Drive digital credit product development in partnership with Product, Technology, and Data Science teams, ensuring that credit risk is embedded at the design stage for all app-based, USSD, and agent-channel lending products.
    • • Manage SME credit cycles end-to-end, with specific expertise in working capital facilities, trade finance instruments, and term lending; ensure SME underwriting reflects cash flow-based assessment and sector-specific risk calibration.
    • • Oversee consumer credit portfolio across auto loans, personal loans, salary-backed facilities, credit cards, and mortgage products; ensure pricing, eligibility, and limit strategies are risk-calibrated and competitively positioned.
    • • Oversee the bank's Islamic banking and Sharia-compliant credit portfolio transition, ensuring all financing products (e.g., Murabaha, Ijarah, and Diminishing Musharakah) are structured, underwritten, and monitored in line with Sharia governance standards and the directions of the Shariah Board.
    • • Own portfolio analytics and credit: vintage analysis, roll-rate monitoring, DPD migration matrices, segment-level loss forecasting, and IFRS 9 stage migration analysis; present portfolio dashboards to BRMCC on a quarterly basis.
    • • Lead model risk governance for all credit models — including development, validation, back-testing, challenger model management, and periodic recalibration — in compliance with SBP model risk guidance.
    • • Drive continuous improvement in credit automation: automated limit management, real-time decisioning APIs, dynamic repricing, and digital early warning system (EWS) integration with collections workflows.
    • • Collaborate with Collections and Special Assets Management (SAM) to establish digital-first recovery strategies, including automated cure nudges, restructuring rule-sets, and write-off governance.
    • • Lead, develop, and retain a high-performance credit team spanning credit analysts, policy specialists, data scientists, and verification officers; instil a culture of analytical rigour and customer-centricity.
    • • Engage with SBP and other regulators on credit-related inspections, prudential regulatory returns, and consumer protection compliance matters.
    • • Any other responsibility assigned by the Chief Risk Officer.
    • • Minimum 12 years of progressive credit experience in a regulated financial institution, with at least 5 years in a senior credit leadership role.
    • • Demonstrated expertise across SME and consumer credit segments, including hands-on experience with credit cycle management, portfolio analytics, and NPL resolution.
    • • Proven track record in building or scaling AI/ML-based credit underwriting infrastructure, preferably in a digital bank, fintech, or branchless banking environment.
    • • Deep familiarity with SBP's Prudential Regulations (SME & Consumer), Consumer Protection Framework, IFRS 9 provisioning requirements, and DFB licensing conditions.
    • • Experience with alternative data-driven credit assessment and digital product design is strongly preferred.
    • • MBA, MS Finance, CFA, CA/ACCA or equivalent; FRM, CRC, or data science credentials are an advantage.
