Head of Consumer Credit

Job Details:

    • The Head of Consumer Credit is a senior role within MMBL's Credit function, responsible for underwriting standards, portfolio quality and credit decisioning across the Bank's full consumer lending suite — including Personal Loan, Salary Loan, Auto loan and card-based lending. The role owns the consumer credit scorecard, delegated approval matrix, and the Bank's AI-based lending and credit decisioning approach for consumer products — spanning AI/ML-driven credit scoring, alternate-data underwriting and automated decisioning solutions. The incumbent ensures underwriting stays within SBP's Consumer Financing Prudential Regulations and the Bank's risk appetite, and works closely with Product, Technology and Collections to keep the consumer book performing as MMBL scales its digital lending journeys in line with SBP's Digital Banking Framework 2022 and its Digital Retail Banking (DRB) transition.
    • • Own end-to-end credit decisioning for the consumer lending portfolio (Personal Loan, Salary Loan, Auto Loan and card products), ensuring underwriting is consistent with Bank policy, SBP Prudential Regulations for Consumer Financing, and approved risk appetite.
    • • Own and maintain the consumer credit scorecard(s), including AI/ML-based scoring models, and the eligibility rules embedded in the Loan Origination System (LOS) / decisioning engine, working with Data/Analytics to recalibrate as disbursement volume and repayment data accumulate.
    • • Define and lead the Bank's AI-based lending approach for consumer credit — evaluating and deploying AI/ML solutions for credit scoring, alternate-data underwriting (transaction, wallet and telco data) and automated decisioning — while ensuring appropriate model governance, explainability and human oversight consistent with the Bank's risk and AI governance frameworks.
    • • Define and enforce the Debt Burden Ratio (DBR), Credit Information Report (CIR) and clean-lending limit checks at underwriting, in line with the applicable SBP consumer financing thresholds.
    • • Hold and exercise delegated credit approval authority for consumer lending within the Bank's approved authority matrix, escalating exceptions and above-threshold cases per policy.
    • • Monitor consumer portfolio quality on an ongoing basis — NPL ratio, vintage curves, roll rates, DPD buckets, and AI/ML scorecard performance and override rates — and translate findings into underwriting, model or policy adjustments in coordination with the Head of Policy.
    • • Partner with Product and Technology teams on the design and digitisation of consumer lending journeys, ensuring AI-based credit rules, limits and decisioning logic are embedded natively within digital onboarding and lending flows, consistent with SBP's Digital Banking Framework 2022.
    • • Work with Collections/SAM on early-warning triggers and recovery strategy for delinquent consumer accounts, and feed portfolio performance into pricing and risk appetite discussions with ALCO/Credit Committee.
    • • Ensure consumer credit processes, AI/ML model documentation and decisioning logic are audit- and SBP-inspection-ready, and act as the consumer credit point of contact for Internal Audit, Compliance and regulatory reviews.
    • • Support new consumer product launches (e.g. new personal loan variants, cross-sell/upsell products) by defining credit eligibility, AI-based decisioning logic and approval limits at the design stage, working with the Head of Policy on the underlying policy paper.
    • • Provide credit training and guidance to sales and branch/digital channel teams to ensure consistent application of consumer credit policy Bank-wide.
    • • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Economics or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred.
    • • 8–12 years of progressive experience in consumer/retail credit risk or underwriting roles within a bank, including at least 3–4 years in a portfolio ownership or leadership capacity.
    • • Strong working knowledge of SBP's Prudential Regulations for Consumer Financing and SBP's Digital Banking Framework 2022, including clean-lending limits, DBR requirements and CIR/credit bureau obligations.
    • • Demonstrated experience with credit scorecards, AI/ML-based credit decisioning models, LOS/decisioning platforms and digital lending journeys.
    • • Working understanding of AI/ML model governance — explainability, bias testing and monitoring — as applied to credit decisioning.
    • • Experience operating in a digital transformation or digital retail banking environment is strongly preferred.
    • • Professional certifications such as FRM, CRC or equivalent credit/risk qualifications are an advantage.
    • Essential Skills
    • • Strong credit underwriting judgement combined with a data-driven, scorecard-based approach to decisioning.
    • • Ability to translate portfolio performance data (NPL, vintage, roll rate) into concrete underwriting and policy changes.
    • • Working understanding of digital customer journeys, LOS/decisioning systems and cross-sell/upsell mechanics.
    • • Effective stakeholder management across Product, Technology, Collections, Compliance and Audit.
    • • Clear written communication for credit papers, policy notes and regulatory submissions.
    • • Sound judgement under regulatory and commercial pressure, balancing portfolio growth with credit discipline.
